Scout Pack 44

The Pine Grove Presbyterian Church is the proud chartering organization for Cub Scout Pack 44. The pack meets on Tuesday evenings at 6:30 p.m. at the church. All youth in grades K-5 are encouraged to attend a meeting and join this fantastic organization.

Cub Scouting is a family-oriented program that instills values such as citizenship, teamwork, honesty, respect, responsibility, and fitness, while being a lot of fun!  We want the youth to have a great time, while teaching them something along the way. We also believe that an important part of scouting is giving back to the community, through community service projects.

Frequently Asked Questions about Pack 44

  • What is cub scouts about? The Boy Scouts of America is one of the nation’s largest and most prominent values-based youth development organizations. The BSA provides a program for young people that builds character, trains them in the responsibilities of participating citizenship, and develops personal fitness. For nearly a century, the BSA has helped build the future leaders of this country by combining educational activities and lifelong values with fun. The Boy Scouts of America believes – and, through nearly a century of experience, knows – that helping youth is a key to building a more conscientious, responsible, and productive society.
  • How old should my child be to be a cub scout? Children (boys and girls are welcome!) must be in grades K–5 to be eligible for cub scouts. Dens are divided by grade and your child may enter cub scouting at any rank/grade and at any time throughout the year. They do not have to start as a Lion or earn any previous rank to begin at their age level.
    • Kindergarten = Lion
    • 1st Grade = Tiger
    • 2nd Grade = Wolf
    • 3rd Grade = Bear
    • 4th Grade = Webelos
    • 5th Grade = Arrow of Light
  • Does my child have to start as a Lion or can they join at any time/rank? Your child can start at any age, any rank, and at any time throughout the year. The ranks are not built on the previous year, they are all earned independent of each other.  Scouts do not have to have earned the previous rank in order to advance. The youth advance to the next rank automatically based on their age (we advance rank at the end of each school year). For example, a 2nd grader can come in and start right away as a Wolf or a 4th grader can begin in the Webelos without worrying about being behind or having to catch up.
  • How much does it cost to join? The only required annual fee is to register your scout. You can register online at: https://my.bsa.us/497paa0044mb
When you first join cub scouts, you will be required to purchase a uniform, which will cost about $40 (see more on uniforms below).  Note: some den activities may require an additional fee, but will be communicated ahead of time.
  • Does my son need a uniform? If so, where do I get it and how much does it cost? Yes, your child will need a uniform that includes: shirt, neckerchief and slide. These items can be purchased online at scoutstuff.org or through the local scout office located in Reedsville. The total average cost of these items is $40, not including shipping. When purchasing a scout uniform shirt, we recommend buying one a few sizes bigger than you need at the moment so that your child can grow into it and you won’t have to purchase a new uniform for a few years. Any scout leader can assist you with uniform questions.
  • What is the time commitment necessary to be a Cub Scout and when/where do you meet? Pack 44 meets for only one hour per week from September through April – with a few extra dates for special events.
    When:
    Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Pine Grove Presbyterian Church, 150 W. Pine Grove Road, Pine Grove Mills, PA 16868.
Concerned about the time commitment? Consider that most other activities require more time than Cub Scouts:
    – Soccer requires two days of practice per week.
    – Baseball requires two-three days of practice/games per week.
    – 75% of scouts participate in playing some kind of sport (many children in Pack 44 participate in sports and/or music and other activities).
  • Who do I contact for more information? You can contact the Pack 44 Committee Chair with any questions at [email protected]
